THE STATESMAN:
CONCORD, SATURDAY, SEPT. 20, 1828.

Extract of a Letter to the Editor, from an intelligent gentleman of Cumberland Co. Maine, under date of Sept. 16.

"The cause of the Administration has succeeded in this State beyond the highest expectations of its most ardent friends. The Opposition have met with a most signal defeat in every County in the State. The Senate is unanimous for the Administration, and the House is at least three fourths for "Adams and Liberty." In this County, the strong hold of Jacksonism in our State, the Opposition were sure of victory. They anticipated a large majority in Portland, and made arrangements for the discharge of cannon the moment the state of the votes was made known. But alas! there was a majority of 100 against them! When their Hickory powder is to be burnt is not yet known.

Every effort was made in this county to deceive the people. Old party names and prejudices were earnestly appealed to by the Coalition, but all in vain. The people are awake, and they have placed the pale seal of death upon the Jackson Junto in this State.

In York County, which last year sent Jackson Senators, and a large majority of Jackson Representatives, there are but two or three Opposition Representatives, and the Administration Senators are elected by about 1600 majority! In Oxford County the votes are about two to one for the Administration--and Mr. Washburn is elected Representative to Congress, over Gen. Ripley, the Jackson candidate. In Lincoln County the Administration ticket has triumphed 4 to 1. In the other counties there was little or no opposition.

But, after all this, you will hear the Argus proclaiming that Maine will give one or more votes for Jackson. But Argus statements are about as good authority among us, as are those of a certain "printer for the people" in your State."
