Sig. Carlo Spigallol sang the tenor aria from "Martha" with fine effect and responded to the demand for an encore with "Non E. Ver."
Miss Josie Rive and Mr. Phil Gotthold, comedy character duettists, were very clever in "Master and Pupil."
Mr. J. A. Donaghey, the baritone, sang "Dear Heart" in a manner which won him a hearty encore.
Prof. Adeom Plate, the prestidigitateur, amused and mystified the audience with his skillful sleight-of-hand performance. Mr. I. Thompson, the monologue artist, was also received with favor.
The "Farewell" song by Mr. Clarence Steele, tenor, was very well rendered, and Mr. Fred Keller's rendition of "The Palms," accompanied by Mr. Von Baar, was enthusiastically applauded.
Miss Rosine Flood, the soprano, sang "Fool's Errand" with excellent voice. The accompanist was Mr. Arthur Ceben.
The feature of the evening, perhaps, was Miss Henriette Markstein's performance upon the piano. Miss Markstein has frequently been heard in this city, and her recitals have been popular. She delighted her Far Rockaway audience, and when in response to a special request she played "Old Black Joe," there was an outburst which was very flattering to the performer.
In a clear address Lawyer William Lane O'Neill said of all the important and noble works accomplished by The Evening World none seemed to him more truly kind than this charity, or more calculated to touch human hearts and evoke the deepest sympathy of every living being, and especially of every mother, and the magnificent audience of probably two thousand persons now present conclusively establish by their presence and by their contributions, amounting to the handsome sum of $257, how thoroughly they appreciated the splendid efforts made by The Evening World.
Mr. Benjamin Franklin said it afforded him great and special pleasure to join with Miss Markstein and his colleagues in this good work, and it was delightful to him to see how thoroughly this vast audience enjoyed the brilliant entertainment provided for them to help this most deserving charity.
Others who contributed to the success of the affair were James Gordon Emmons and Leslie Hosson, elocutionists; Miss Ollie Blanchard, soprano, and Arthur Temme, violinist. After the concert there was a delightful dance, in which the boys and girls of all ages joined.
In the subscription list the sum realized is given as $245. To this should be added the contributions of Mayor Gleason, Judge Bischoff and William Lane O'Neill, making a grand total of $257.45.
