CHARLESTON, S. C.-(ANP)--State Constable J. P. Hardin was held to the Grand Jury here Tuesday charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, in connection with the beating up of George Sinkler, an attendant of a nearby tourist camp.
When the case was called Hardin failed to put in his appearance but a few minutes later a messenger arrived bearing a message from the Chief Constable that Hardin had been "unavoidably detained." His failure to appear did not prevent the hearing of the evidence and the subsequent binding over to the grand jury. Sinkler repeated his charges that Hardin, accompanied by a woman and in an intoxicated condition ordered some beer and after being served became angry when appraised of the price and struck him over the head several times with the butt of his revolver.
