"Lemon Dance"
CALIPATRIA, March 13.—A number of young men in this city know what it means to be "handed a lemon." The knowledge was gained at the Baseball dance Thursday evening when several "lemon" dances were featured, and while they created considerable merriment they were the means of parting several dimes and quarters from their owners. The "lemon" dance is in the nature of a robber dance. After the dance commences, a number of men start out with lemons which they hand to one of the dancers, at the same time relieving him of his dancing partner. When the music stops every man holding a lemon is fined, and as the music had an annoying habit of stopping at the most inopportune moments, the dance was exceedingly lively as everyone with a lemon was seemingly anxious that someone else should have it when the music stopped. The money collected by these dances was given for the prize waltz, which was won by Miss Ruth Johnson and Ladimer Mashin. A miniature baseball diamond was made on the dancing floor around which the contestants danced, accomplishing this difficult feat very cleverly.
