Ismail Pacha in London.

London World.

Ismail Pacha, the ex-khedive of Egypt is about to return to Italy. His stay in London, and his presence at many of our great social gatherings during the past month, have been among the features of the now departed season. Ismail has discussed the past, present and future of the country he governed during eighteen years with politicians and diplomatists of all shades of thought and opinion. It is only fair to him to say that he has created a generally favorable impression, and the result is that nobody can quite make out why the inscrutable wisdom of the Anglo-French condominium ever forced him to leave Egypt at all, or why he is not allowed to return there, to evolve order out of chaos, if he has the power, tact and wisdom to do so. We are told over and over again that Mr. Gladstone will neither annex nor protect that unhappy country. If this is so, the Egyptians should be allowed to elect a ruler of their choice; and there is little doubt that 95 per cent of them would, as things now stand, give their suffrages to Ismail.

Event Details

Ismail Pacha, the ex-khedive of Egypt, is about to return to Italy after staying in London and attending social gatherings during the past month. He discussed Egypt's past, present, and future with politicians and diplomatists, leading to questions about why he was forced to leave Egypt and why he cannot return to restore order. The text argues that if Britain will not annex or protect Egypt, Egyptians should elect their own ruler, with most likely choosing Ismail.
