Carthage, Dec. 28.-A young mother, bereft of her 10-month-old infant by the gunfire of her estranged husband who also killed himself, battled for life today in the Moore county hospital as a result of a Christmas domestic tragedy.
The mother, Mrs. Arthur Blake Maness, was said to be in a critical state with rifle wounds in the head, chest and arm.
She was shot early yesterday by her husband at the home of her father, Tommy Hussey, about 20 miles north of here.
Deputy Sheriff H. H. Graham and Coroner D. Carl Fry, who investigated the shooting, said Maness drove to the Hussey home, first shot his wife, then fired a rifle charge through the head of his 10-month-old child, which slightly wounded his sister-in-law, Annie Hussey, and then left hurriedly in his automobile.
Graham said Maness then drove seven miles to the home of his father, McClendon Maness, informed relatives of what he had done and then fired a rifle bullet through his heart.
Graham said Maness Monday was given a 12-month suspended sentence in recorder's court upon conviction of assault upon his wife and was placed under a $1,200 peace bond.
