CHICAGO (ANP)—Americans must decide in this decade to inaugurate programs for the peaceful use of social energy and to curtail the human wastage of our time.
Dr. Ira De A. Reid, chairman of the department of sociology and anthropology at Haverford College, Haverford, Pa., made his "Decade For Decision" remarks at the annual meeting of the Chicago Urban League last week.
Speaking last week before a crowd of 500 persons in the Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House, Reid explained this wastage as a result of discriminatory practices in employment and other avenues of expression.
WASTE COMPOUNDED
"We waste the talents of individuals in this manner and we waste government funds when we give relief payments and social services that these individuals might otherwise provide for themselves, were it not for discrimination,"
"We must," he continued, "also discard some of the outmoded methods that are used in social work, begin to look for the basic causes and stop treating the symptoms of our problems."
Reid pointed out that not one community in the nation was really ready for democracy when the U. S. Supreme Court made its famous May 17, 1954 decision on the desegregation of public schools.
OUTLINED SET BACKS
He outlined setbacks and progresses of the six decades of the 20th century and explained what was needed to be done in his seventh decade, the 1960s. The biggest job, he said, was to see that people were saved for adequate
the production of human accord" as he addressed the crowd. "At no other point in time," he continued, "has there been so great a potential for human accord than right now and at this spot."
