Full Text

Norfolk, August 2.

The four seamen of the privateer General Rundeau's crew, who were a short time since arrested in this Borough and committed to jail, were on Saturday last brought before Judge Parker of this District, by a writ of habeas corpus. After a minute and careful examination of the case, and the evidence upon which they were committed, the judge decided that they could not be held in custody, and accordingly ordered them to be released. As this case is peculiarly interesting on account of its involving questions of state rights, and as being the first that has been decided under the new law, it will afford us great pleasure to present the public with the opinion of judge P. in our next paper, which we shall have it in our power to do, through the kindness of the judge, who has politely favored us with a copy of it.
