Fowle's New Hampshire Gazette And General Advertiser

NEW PROVIDENCE.

Nassau, Jan. 6. A writer in the Public Advertiser of the 20th of October last, says— “Were extracts from American Gazettes more generally admitted into our public prints, the effect might be of service in evincing the wretched consequences of ingratitude and rebellion. These Glorious Sons of Freedom acknowledge themselves to be bankrupts in Faith as well as Cash. They own that they have among them no public spirit, no union, no government. Each mushroom state accuses its twin brother of being the cause of that contempt in which the American name is held throughout Europe, and each has at least plausible ground for the accusation. Now let us look at our own picture, drawn by very able hands in the caricatura style. The prints on the side of opposition give but a bad character of poor Old England, as to her good sense and ingenuity; but nothing can be hinted, by her bitterest foes, against her Honor and Integrity. The soldiers and sailors of Britain clamour not for half pay, or pensions, earned by service. Her public debts are regularly discharged—her merchants are generally honest—and her laws (open equally to the native and the alien) would compel them to act justly, were they otherwise disposed. Add to these, that impoverished as the nation has been, by an unequal, unsuccessful war, she has yet the honesty to distress herself, rather than abandon to wretchedness those friends, who, in supporting her cause, lost their all. —Read this contrast, O America! and blush for thy misled, fallen country!”
