Customs Head Resigns Office In Washington

WASHINGTON, May 3.—(P)—William R. Johnson, whose management of the Customs Bureau has been sharply criticized by Congress, has asked to be relieved of his post as commissioner.

Secretary of the Treasury Snyder announced last night the 51-year-old Johnson will serve as special advisor to the American delegation at the International trade conference in Geneva and then step down to a subordinate position in the customs Bureau when he returns.

Johnson's present assistant, Frank Dow, will act as commissioner pending a new appointment.
