"Vergennes, (Vt.) May 29, 1814.-SIR,
I have the pleasure to inform you that Com. McDonough, with the fleet, sailed from the mouth of Otter Creek this morning, consisting of one ship of 26 guns, six long 24's, fourteen 32's, carronades, and six 42's, with a schooner of 20 guns, four long 18's, six 32's, and ten long 12's, with six new row galleys, 75 feet in length and 15 feet beam, mounting one long 24 in the bow, and one 18 Columbian in the stern, with four of the old galleys, mounting one 18, and the sloop Preble, mounting 10 guns, with one heavy gun on a pivot. They have on board upwards of two hundred soldiers to assist them, but we expect more men every moment. We have here two sloops, the President, (store-ship) of 2 guns, with the Montgomery, (victualling-vessel) of 3 guns, which makes the whole force we have on this Lake. I have just received orders from the Commodore, to send the first men that arrive here to him at Plattsburgh."
