Jefferson County has 4,726 youths, between the ages of 6 and 21 years, and receives for the school year of 1877-8, $4,731.83, according to the appropriation fund. Berkeley has 3,143 youths and gets $3,447.29.

The State Superintendent of Free Schools has completed his apportionment of the distributable school fund among the various counties. The amount of money distributed is $195,000 and the number of youths whose education it is intended to aid is 194,800—giving each child about one dollar's worth of financial assistance in his ascent up the weary hill of knowledge.
