One of Them Captured and One of Them Killed.
A dispatch from Chico, California, says: Sheriff Morse, of Mendocino, left Chico a few days ago, in company with Mrs. Stanley and a few others, determined to make another attempt at the capture of the Mendocino outlaws. From information obtained, they had every reason to believe that they were secreted in Butte Creek canyon, in the neighborhood of Nimshew, and yesterday morning, about daylight, they came upon them in an old cabin down in the canyon, between Nimshew and Big Butte Creek. The cabin was surrounded by brush, except a little clearance in front. Two of the men were in the cabin and one was engaged in chopping wood on the outside. On the approach of the Sheriff and posse they were called upon to surrender, and the guns of the party were leveled at them, so it was thought their capture was certain. Seeing that it was impossible to get to their guns, the murderers immediately broke for the thick brush near at hand. A volley was fired at them, and Billings fell mortally wounded. Brown and Gauntz made their escape, each running in opposite directions, and each followed by a party of the Sheriff's posse. Gauntz made his way directly through the brush toward Nimshew, and took refuge in an old cabin near the main road leading to town, arriving ahead of Sheriff Morse, who was returning to Chico with the body of Billings. From this place he was enabled to view the crowd assembling around the hotel, holding an inquest and preparing a box for the body of his dead comrade. A party in search of him came to the hotel late in the evening to rest. In the morning, Charles Hill came to the hotel and informed the officers that he had lost a robe out of his buggy, near the old cabin by the road. This put the officers again on the track. Stanley who had headed this party, concluded to examine every place in the vicinity, and the old cabin received his attention, and, on going into it, found Gauntz tucked under Hill's missing buggy robe. He was called upon to surrender, and being unarmed, hungry and cold, he merely replied: "Boys, you have got me; I am ready." Gauntz is a small, spare man, and has been known by the name of "French Dick." Stanley and Hill arrived in town with him, heavily ironed, and he now occupies a cell in the lockup. The party are still in pursuit of Brown, and he being without hat or proper clothing, it is expected that he will shortly be captured.
