Full Text

A Grave Emblem.

Some practical joker, whose time hangs heavy on his hands, constructed during his leisure moments a tin coffin, which he painted black, and branded on its lid the portentous numbers 601. This specimen of his handiwork and ingenuity, he yesterday deposited on the Ruby Hill road, where it could be viewed by all passers by. The excited discoveries of the warning spread all sorts of rumors in regard to the meaning of the 'grave' symbol, and magnified it into a preliminary step on the part of a supposed secret organization, whose very existence in Eureka is problematical. If, however, the coffin and its hieroglyphics exercise a restraining influence on the offenders in our midst, and causes them to repress their evil instincts, the joker will not have had his labor in vain; but we opine that it will take more vigorous measures than the mere display of tin coffins to check the rounders and thieves in their vicious courses.
