There are many citizens who find much to complain
of about conditions in the United States, but one thing is
certain, in no land are the opportunities better than in this
country for obtaining an education to fit oneself for any
career one may choose. In the United States knowledge
is free. All that the individual needs to make the most of
the opportunities presented, is to have the energy and de-
termination to take advantage of them to the fullest extent.
Library facilities are such that in all parts of the
country it is possible easily to obtain dependable informa-
tion on any subject of human interest or any branch of
knowledge, whether technical or otherwise. The separate
states offer a wide variety of free educational opportunities
in many branches; the large cities maintain free night
schools offering instruction in academic studies, in the arts
and in the trades, and the federal government supplies with-
out cost, an immense amount of free educational material.
No boy or girl in the United States need go without an
education for lack of funds.
Because the opportunities for obtaining an education
and acquiring knowledge are so good, we are prone to accept
them as a matter of course, forgetting that in other lands
and even in the United States several generations ago, men
and women underwent all sorts of hardships and incon-
veniences to acquire knowledge and obtain information.
The story of Abraham Lincoln walking miles through the
forests just to obtain a book that would be considered very
dry reading these days, reminds us how different conditions
were a century ago.
Each year hundreds of millions of dollars are expended
in this country for free education, and our boys and girls
should be properly impressed with the unparalleled oppor-
tunities they enjoy. Isanti Co. News.
