EX-SENATOR CHARGES
BRIBERY ATTEMPT

CHICAGO, Aug. 16-(AP)-- Frank L. Smith, who was refused a seat in the United States senate after his election in 1925, stated tonight in an open letter to Prof. Carroll H. Wooddy, of the University of Chicago that Julius Rosenwald, Chicago millionaire, offered him 10,000 shares of Sears-Roebuck stock to withdraw from the senatorial race in 1926.

Smith quoted Rosenwald as saying, in a conversation October 3, 1926, in the Congress hotel in Chicago: "If you will withdraw from the senatorial race, I am here to offer you 10,000 shares of Sears-Roebuck stock."

Smith added he declined the offer without hesitation.

Smith stated Rosenwald was the chief sponsor for Hugh S. Magill, who ran as an "independent republican" in the campaign which resulted in Smith's election and his subsequent denial of a seat in the senate after an investigation into his campaign contributions.

The meeting October 3, 1926, was arranged at request of Rosenwald, Smith asserted. He and his brother-in-law C. J. Ahern, engaged rooms at the Congress hotel shortly before noon. Smith said, and "promptly at noon Rosenwald arrived." Smith and Rosenwald were the only ones in the room during the interview, Smith said, Ahern remaining outside.

Rosenwald told him, Smith continued, that he could not be seated even if he were elected senator, that Rosenwald was supporting Magill and had disclosed in a recent meeting of republicans he would put up $500,000 if he thought Magill could be elected.
