CHATHAM, March 12.

The following particular account of the capture mentioned in our last, it is hoped, will be agreeable to our readers, and serve as a stimulus to others, to excite them to the like heroic actions.—On the night of the 2d instant, Major William Crane, Capt. Thomas Quigley, Capt. Samuel Harriman, William Williamson, Malines Miller, Robert Spencer, Morris Hetfield, and John Hannon, 8 in number, embarked in a whale-boat, and proceeded for New-York, where they boarded and took possession of a 24 gun ship, called the Eagle, then lying under the old battery, which was conducted with so much gallantry and address, that no opposition was attempted by the crew; on the contrary, every individual sought for a place of security; but their endeavours for that purpose were rendered abortive by the unprecedented valour and vigilance of those heroic spirits, who conducted the enterprize.—After having captured a naval Captain, and 18 men, they secured them on board the sloop, which then lay alongside the Eagle; and found her laden with 20 puncheons of Jamaica spirits, most of the ship’s sails, with 12 6 pounders, loaded and mounted, besides muskets, &c.—The sloop they brought off, and passed through the Kills, without molestation, for Elizabeth-Town Point; where, having lighted the vessel, they led her in triumph to the landing, where she lies a visible testimony of martial enterprize and heroism.—In justice to those men, whose undaunted resolution ensured them success, we must observe, that it is a brilliant feat, and deserves the applause of their country and its adherents.
