Speaker Cannon Tells Congressmen that the Session Was the Greatest in History—Ship Subsidy Bill Was Finally Killed.
Washington, March 4.—The Fifty-ninth congress is declared by Speaker Cannon and President Roosevelt to be the greatest congress in history, so far as remedial legislation sought by the people is concerned. It was adjourned at noon today sine die.
As the hour of noon approached the house gave itself up to song and mirth. When the speaker brought down the gavel with a whack and said, "It's all over boys," the members arising to their feet sang, "For he's a jolly good fellow."
In the Senate there was not so much hurrah. The feature was a visit from the president who came from the White House to sign belated bills. Notwithstanding the president was turned down on several important measures, he considers this the greatest congress.
Ship Subsidy Is Dead.
Washington, March 4.—The ship subsidy bill is dead. Parmack, of Tennessee, prepared to continue attack when Gallagher, in charge of the measure, withdrew it.
The Senate unanimously approved the railway trainmen's bill, prohibiting more than sixteen hours' work for trainmen and nine hours for telegraphers.
