"We are now fighting for the life of our nation today-and don't know it," J. E. Martie, National Vice-Commander of the American Legion, declared today in an address before the Juneau Rotary Club.
"The Trojan horse does not come galloping in. He is pulled in-not pushed. I'm not worried about bombs and armaments but we have permitted infiltration of Communist ideas. We, as a nation are too complacent because we've never lost a war . . . but this one is different. We must be alert to the boring tactics and the real dangers confronting this country. We can win if we do not permit this attack against the spirit of the American people.
"The Communists do not bother with the grayheads but they're busy working on the children and the people who mould public opinion. Watch the letters to the editor and see how often insidious ideas are cleverly concealed.
"They are a myriad of Communist-front organizations that seem harmless enough. Watch them. Over a period of years they can develop their objectives if we do not remain alert. This spot is vital to the enemy's plans. You must have Communists up here--they're everywhere. Don't take too much for granted," Martie warned.
Edward Keithahn introduced the speaker. Visiting Rotarians were A. J. Peterson of Anchorage, C. M. Archbald from Ketchikan, Martin S. Jorgensen of Anchorage, and Charles Whitemore of Sitka. Jack Burford, Jr., was also a guest.
