POLITICAL RHYMES.
The
Psalm of the Period, By
Avery Dycuss, LL. D.
The following rather clever doggerel is
from the columns of the 'New York Sun'
As a deer to her fawn clings,
My heart cleaves to Conkling's
I am anxious to shorten
The terror of Morton;
I share all the pain
Of our dear Brother Blaine
I mourn for the cruel
Annoyance of Jewell;
I pray that Grant his toe
Won't plant upon Bristow:
I hark to the wish
Of Don Butler Fish:
I shrink when they hammer on
The innocent Cameron;
Or hint that some job is on
The fair fame of Robeson:
And would like to determine
The torture of Sherman
At those fearful disclosures
And shameful exposures,
By Clymer's committee
In Boss Shepherd's city.
O Satan, great master,
Why suffer disaster,
And let all men heap ill
Upon thine own people?
How long, Lord Abaddon,
May reckless men madden,
By such criminations,
With specifications,
And queries bewild'rin',
Thy dutiful children?
How long shall the saints
Make their maudlin complaints,
Stick their needles and skewers
In things that are ours.
And bring us to grief,
The shame of our chief?
To afford us relief,
Come up and be brief!
Come to aid our collusion,
And bring them confusion:
Come and help this poor rhymer
To climb over Clymer
Who is also a Heister
Of Belknap, the shyster;
Such plans now pursue
That our Centennial U.
S. may be coaxed,
And cozened and hoaxed,
So that during November
They'll cease to remember
The curious action
Of Grant and his faction.
And give'em opportunity
To steal with impunity,
For four twelvemonths more,
As for eight years before:
And when they to this come,
Say—'Praeses vobiscum':
