NEWPORT, May 5.

We are pleased to announce the return of General William C. Gibbs, who has for some time past resided in a southern climate, for the benefit of an impaired constitution, occasioned, it is believed, by his extraordinary and praiseworthy exertions in rescuing, even at the hazardous peril of his own life, a fellow creature from a watery grave. This humane and heroick exploit, it is admitted, evinced unusual presence of mind, combined with undaunted fortitude. We are also happy to state, that appearances indicate a realization of our anxious wishes for his speedy restoration to the enjoyment of health.
