His Health Not Good, But His Friends Want Him to Accept.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 13.—The Christmas recess of congress is expected to begin either next Saturday or on Wednesday of next week. Speaker Crisp said to-night that he did not now expect to get his committee list ready by either day. The chairmanship of the ways and means committee is still the principal puzzle. Speaker Crisp appears to be waiting for Mr. Mills to intimate that he will take it, and Mr. Mills for Speaker Crisp to intimate that he can have it. Mrs. Mills, fearing that the health of her husband, not good now, may break down if he has to do now half what he did as chairman in 1889, is opposing his taking the chairmanship. But Messrs. Carlisle, Morrison and most of his other friends are advising Mr. Mills to accept. He will probably do so if the offer is made, and it still seems likely that it will be.
