NEW YORK - (UPI) -Sports of all sorts:
Australian tennis pro Frank Sedgman reports interest in the game "down under" is lagging for the same reason as over here - lack of new talent . . . The pros have swiped all the top Aussies except Neale Fraser, Rod Laver and Roy Emerson and the younger crop doesn't look promising.
"There were only 50 paid admissions for the semifinal matches of the national championships." said Sedgman. "Laver was in one of but for the life of me I can not remember the other three players."
Okay, things are rough all over for amateur tennis . . .
The strong finish by amateur Charley Coe in the Masters golf championship tying Arnold Palmer for second place revived talk about the chances of a simon pure winning the U. S. Open in Birmingham, Mich.., June 12-17 .. . Last amateur to win it was Johnny Goodman 28 years ago . . . Others were Francis Ouimet 1913, Jerry Travers 1915, Chick Evans 1916, and Goodman in 1933 . . . Coe and Jack Nicklaus, the blond belter from Ohio State, are the top amateur threats.
WRITER PICKS TINS
A baseball writer picked the Minnesota Twins to win the pennant and Cookie Lavagetto as manager of the year to which Cookie replied, "Who, me?" He'll settle right now for a spot in the middle of the American League pack but figures to hurt some of the big teams along the way.
Kyle Rote, veteran end for New York's football Giants, might have churned out a pretty fair career in baseball . . . He hit .348 as an outfielder in the Class B Gulf Coast League in 1949 . . . Once blasted three home runs in a game.
Roger Maris of the Yankees, Most Valuable Player in the American League last year, is the cover boy on the 1961 edition of "Who's Who In Baseball" . . . Dick Groat of the Pirates, NL batting champ as well as MVP, rates only the back cover though it was Pittsburgh, not New York, that won the World Series,
PALMER RANKS FOURTH
Arnold Palmer's second place finish in the Masters, worth $12,000 shot him into fourth place among the top PGA money winners since 1947 . . . Cary Middlecoff leads the accumulative totals with $274,135.88. Doug Ford is second, Sam Snead third and Palmer fourth with $233,963.27 . . .Palmer replaced Julius Boros in the fourth spot.
Joe Bellino, Navy's All-America halfback and "player of the year" in college football last fall, is having his troubles shaking the slump that caught up with him in the Orange Bowl game against Missouri . . . Joe is playing left field for the Middies in baseball and, at last report, was hitting .188 . . .
Joe has a long Navy hitch to serve once he is graduated but if he turns up to pro sports afterwards baseball is his chief hope.
