WASHINGTON-(ANP)- Jesse Owens, world record holder, and Joe Louis, heavyweight prize fighter, were featured guests at festivities held in connection with the annual convention of the Improved Benevolent Order of Elks of the World here last week.
The sprinter and the clouter fell easily into each other's graces as easily as conspiring politicians and accepted the plaudits of the mob which followed them with a becoming sort of modesty. During most of the celebrating, Jesse, the college world record star, was a "forgotten man" as he shared the spotlight with the heavyweight blaster. The roars of cheers were plainly for the poker faced ex-Ford mechanic. The crowd did not stop to figure out that Owens had in one afternoon three times excelled the records of any other human beings in history.
Ten thousand persons turned out Tuesday night to catch a glimpse of Louis at a boxing show staged under the auspices of the visiting Elks. They roared and threw hats in the air when Louis nimbly leaped into the ring, shook hands with a couple of heavy weight fighters and took his bow.
In the afternoon, Joe met President Roosevelt and shook hands. He accomplished his greeting to the chief Executive with the same show of nonchalance which marks him on all occasions. The President autographed a photograph for him.
Owens also staged a one-man show for the Elks- donning his togs to sprint 100 yards in 9.5 seconds and jumping more than 21 feet. A couple of Howard University's champions sought to give him some entertainment, but they were no class with the Ohio State phenom.
As part of his routine while here, Louis also spoke over the radio and expressed the belief he would win by a knockout from Maxie Baer. He refused to name the round, saying it was a matter of guesswork anyhow, but he did not believe the fight would go the scheduled 15 rounds. He said he might put Baer out quicker than he did Levinsky, all depending on when he connected solidly.
"If I hit him solid, he go down and stay down ten seconds." Joe asserted.
