"When we see in particular papers, an indiscriminate attempt to justify every measure pursued by individuals, whether smuggled, or otherwise, into the federal government, it is not difficult to know the reason why the term "staunch republican" is disgusting to the Editors of such papers. —For, the "staunch republican," neither courting the smiles, nor fearing the frowns of men in power, is too apt to find fault that our revenue is wasted in extravagant salaries, as well as pensioners living on the earnings of the people : he is for breaking up that slough of the revenue, the war department : and is for dismissing men from their employment, when he finds that instead of promoting the public interest, they are involving the country in blood, for their own private emolument.—" [Bot.Indep.Chron.
