Full Text

They write from Amsterdam, that the Promotion of General Officers has met with a fresh Remora. The Opposers of a Stadtholder are so much upon their Guard, and are jealous of every Thing which seems to have a Tendency to raise the Prince of Orange to that eminent Station, that they have persuaded themselves the Condition in the Resolution of the Province of Friesland for appointing the Prince General at the next succeeding Promotion, is bringing him too near that high Post; wherefore the Deputies of the opposing Provinces have in such a Manner deferr'd determining any Thing upon this Resolution, that it's believed they will never consent to it, they having declared, that a Promotion of Lieutenant-Generals being only necessary, they could not engage themselves in any Condition that went further than that. If the Provinces persist in these Sentiments, the Promotion may not probably yet take Place.
