Full Text

The decree of the French Convention for abolishing the national church establishment, will be read with disgust or approbation, according to the different sentiments which prevail amongst men. Those who think that christianity must, like all other religions, be supported by penal laws, and by the word of the magistrate, will undoubtedly predict its downfall. But those who have that high opinion of christianity, as to be persuaded that its own intrinsic excellency will ensure its success, have little doubt that it will in a short time flourish more, be better understood, and better practised in France, than in those countries where statecraft and priestcraft, its pretended friends, but real enemies, have so officiously intruded.
