WELL-MADE BASKETS OF GOOD DESIGN WANTED AS RODEO SALES AND FAIRS EXHAUST SUPPLIES

More baskets than ever before were sold by the Self-Help Committee during the rodeo days.

Mrs. Lolita Manuel, chairman of the basket buying and selling program for the group says that $437.75 worth of baskets were sold.

The amount of sales was $100.00 more than in 1958.

Sophie Stevens, Big Field basketmaker, demonstrated her talent in the Tribal councilroom.

She was also photographed for an article in the Tucson Citizen.

Baskets of all kinds are being bought now by Mrs. Manuel. Several orders cannot be filled until new baskets arrive.

Only baskets of good design and workmanship are in demand.

A number of other baskets were on display at the Pinal county fair late in October. Margaret Stevens of Big Fields received a third prize for her fruit bowl, and Mrs. Manuel received a similar prize for a wastebasket.

The wastebasket has been bought by the University of Arizona.

Other basketmakers whose work was on display included Lamelia Lewis and the late Lucy Ramon, both of Big Fields; Malinda Joaquin, Covered Wells; and Laura Ramon, Fresnal Village.

For the first time in the history of the rodeo, the Tucson Indian Training school sent a busload of young people to the Saturday afternoon performance. Sixteen students came, including Hopis and Pimas as well as Papagos.
