Full Text
The elderly gentleman being sick, had a negro to watch with him--in the night feeling better, he bid the negro to go into an adjoining room, make a fire, and lie down before it--the negro did so, and after some time was awakened by the noise of the fire, the house being then in flames.--He endeavoured to awake the sick man and his wife--but in vain--he then alarmed the other part of the sleeping family--and the wife of the young man, sleeping below, went up stairs, and threw two of the children out of the window--- and jumped out after them herself--though much hurt she went into her own room and rescued her infant from the flames.--An attempt was made to enter a chamber in which two other children slept, but failed--one of these children was seen to push a window up, and to jump out, but being encircled in the flames could not escape, and with the other child, the elderly gentleman and his wife, with the furniture, and all the house contained, fell a hapless sacrifice to this devouring element.
