AUSTIN, Nev., Dec. 2.--That great mining operations will center at Austin, giving an impetus to mining in this whole central Nevada region, is more definitely assured at this writing than ever before.
The key to this revival which is to change the entire business aspect of this section is cheap ore reduction here at home.
In all of Austin's glorious past, $30 ore went to the waste dump. With the mill, now to be installed here, after a year of experimentation, $10 ore will be the foundation for dividends. There are hundreds of properties within a radius of 35 miles from Austin that will begin work when a market for the ore in Austin is assured.
This local market is in sight. The past week L. D. Mills of the C. W. Merrill metallurgical works at San Francisco has been in Austin doing the preliminary work in the Austin Manhattan mill, for the installation of the new reduction plant. This installation will be rushed as fast as it possibly can be, as the company already has developed ore sources that require a milling plant.
The system will be a combination of crushing, concentration, grinding and cyaniding. At a minimum it will save 95 per cent of the Austin ore. This has been demonstrated by repeated tests and mill runs. The Austin Manhattan company, which is installing the system, will put in a sampler and enter the market for the purchase of all ores produced in this section of the country. As the demand requires it, the mill will be enlarged indefinitely as the company has ample capital to warrant extensive preparations for handling custom ores.
This company is breaking a good grade of milling ore both in the Frost shaft on the Panamint vein and in the Jack Pot mine.
The past week chronicles the opening up of high grade ore at depth on the Peerless lease on Midas Flat, two miles northwest of the town of Austin. This proves the continuity of the Lander hill ledges to the northwest, far out into the flat. The lessees have a ledge nearly two feet in width that will go $120 to the ton without sorting.
Specimens of gold ore were brought down this week from the strike on the Shamrock group of claims near Ione. The rock is saturated with the yellow grains of coarse gold. The property belongs to the Blue Bell Mining company of Goldfield.
George Watt and Joe Bradley have begun leasing operations on the well known Watt mine in New York canyon.
