For the Spirit of the Age.

Mr. EDITOR:—Early in the present year, some of the good people in our neighborhood organized a "Social Circle" in this place, and although they at first met with little success, they continued their exertions to increase the number and respectability of their organization, until they were blessed with success even almost beyond their most sanguine expectations.

At first almost every one was opposed to it, from the fact that there had at a previous time, been an "Order of the Sons of Temperance at this place, which did not last for a long season! after the going down of which, those who had joined it, (or, at least that portion of them who had once been intemperate and joined it) returned to the "Flesh pots of Egypt," and were, if possible, worse inebriates than they had been previous to the taking of the "pledge. But notwithstanding the difficulties with which the friends of the "Social Circle" have had to battle, they have succeeded in raising their number to more than the strongest advocate anticipated. There are yet materials on which to operate. Many are still standing aloof from us, but we hope at no far distant day to see many more enlist under the banner of "Love Purity and Fidelity" give their aid to the cause of temperance, and fight with united strength against "Old King Alcohol."

Mr. Editor, one good effect of this society has been felt in our midst already; and if not another one is reformed, enough has been done to amply repay the friends of Temperance for the outlay of money, trouble, &c., they have thus far sustained. But the work is just commenced and ere long the powers of Temperance must yield to the mighty hands, hearts and heads which are now engaged in this glorious reformation, which is now going on in our midst.

May the Lord give to us for our labor temperate husbands, brothers and fathers. Beside this advantage, the Ladies are received into the "Social Circle" as members. And where the Ladies are received into an organization of any kind, it is sure to secure respect and success.

A FRIEND OF TEMPERANCE.

Main Argument

the new 'social circle' in forkland has successfully grown despite initial opposition due to a failed prior temperance group, achieving reforms and including ladies for greater success; more should join to fight alcohol and promote temperance.
