GA.-ALA. LOOP CHAMPIONSHIP
The 1959 pennant race of the Georgia - Alabama Amateur Baseball League ended Sunday with the Atlanta Yankees, who spent most of the season in third place, coming from behind to sweep the championship with a brilliant 24-and-6 record and an .800 percentage.
The Rockdale Rawhides, who had an excellent opportunity to wind-up in a first-place tie with the Yankees, finished in the runner-up spot with a 23-and-7 record for a .767 percentage while the defending champion Atlanta Braves who led most of the way faded and finished with a 19-and-7 record for a .731 percentage.
YANKEES HAD TO
FIGHT ALL THE WAY
Loaded with hustling youngsters and an array of crack hurlers, the Yankees had to fight all the way to maintain their third-place spot, then after sweeping a doubleheader with the Hilcos Red Sox on August 3 they mauled the Decatur Braves 9-0 APACO Lions 9-1 and picked up four victories by forfeit.
The fact is, the Yankees were idle Sunday, when the Newnan Cardinals found it impossible to keep a date with them at Yankee Field but they got a big lift from their traditional rivals, the Atlanta Braves, who knocked the Rockdale Rawhides out of a first place tie by winning the night-cap of a scheduled double-header.
EUGENE ANDERSON
HURLS ONE-HITTER
Saturday, Eugene Anderson, promising young Yankee righthander from Archer High School, threw a one-hitter at the APACO Lions, chalking up six strikeouts along the way. Wesley Swanson helped salt the game away with a two-run home run in the third, his fifth of the season. Cotton, who got the Lions only hit, started on the mound and was relieved by Willie Roseberry in the fifth.
In another make-up game Saturday, the Ellenwood Athletics shutout the APACO Lions, 3-0, behind the effective pitching of Matthews and Brown. Martin smashed out a homer for Ellenwood in the first with a mate aboard. Roseberry went the distance for Lions.
MANAGER CHARLIE DAVIS
SPARKLES
ON MOUND
Manager Davis, veteran left-hander and one of the best all-around players in the Georgia Alabama loop, let the Atlanta Braves with only three hits Sunday as the Rawhides won the opener of their crucial twinbill at Hull Stadium.
Righthander Gene Young, who scored the Braves only run in the first inning and got one of its three singles off Davis, limited the Rawhides to only four hits but went down in defeat because of infield miscues around the keystone bag and untimely throwing errors.
The Rawhides put the game midway with four runs two unearned, in the fourth when Dave Banks singled and Manager Davis lashed out a solid two-bagger.
STROZIER HURLS 3-HITTER
THOMAS AND MORGAN HOMER
Johnny "Duke" Strozier, righthander, tossed a neat three-hitter and Joe Thomas and Lloyd Morgan slammed round-trippers, as the Braves bounced back and took the second game, 6-3. Thomas hit for the circuit in the first inning off starter Wallace Jones, then Morgan blasted a long drive off Davis in the fifth.
A single by Lloyd Ramsey and Dan Henderson's double gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the second. they put the game on ice in the fourth on singles by Dan Henderson, James Nuckles, A. B. Hall and a double by Young.
The Rawhides scored a single run in the fourth, when Theodore Spears beat out an infield hit, his second hit in the contest and added two more in the seventh when Dillard Radford led-off with a single and Banks was safe on an error.
