MORAL SELECTIONS.
MADAGASCAR PRAYER.
Mercy, Eternal One!
Thou art for aye enduring in thy might;
But like the perishing meteors of the night
Our race is run.
Mercy, Infinite One!
Creation is to thee as nought—and woe
But atoms of that vast infinity
From thee begun.
Mercy, most Mighty One!
Thou art the embodied essence of all power
We but the shadowy frailties of an hour—
Motes in the sun.
Mercy, Omniscient One!
Thou art the source of knowledge and of light—
We, wanderers mid the gloom of error's night
Sunless—alone!
Mercy, All-bounteous One!
Thine is creation's wealth;—unlike to thee
Ours is but sighs and tears, the treasury
From sorrow won.
Thou All-sufficient One,
Mercy! to thee with suppliant hearts we turn,
From thee we came:—whither shall we return,
Our wanderings done?
