An inquest was held by Coroner Devaux at Commercial wharf, yesterday, upon the body of a man named Timothy Clancey, when the following circumstances were elicited: Timothy Clancey, the deceased, Henry Smith, and Hugh Brown, and Mark Kelly, were engaged upon the Salt Works, on Edisto Island, owned by Richard Yoman. The parties were all engaged on the evening of the first of May, at the house where the hands lived, in a game of cards. As the hour grew late, Henry Smith proposed to leave, and Timothy Clancey proposed to go with him part of the way; after some demur it was at last agreed that he should go and stay all night at Smith's house. On the morning of Tuesday, the second inst., about 7 o'clock, the body of Timothy Clancey was found lying at the road side, by Smith's gate; blood was seen upon the gate: upon the steps of Smith's house; upon an axe and chair, near the fire place, and also upon Smith's hands and face. Upon enquiry being made as to what had happened to Clancey, Smith put the axe and chair into the fire, and ordered deponent to be gone, or he would shoot him. The verdict of the Jury, upon these facts, was, "that the said Timothy Clancy came to his death at the residence of Henry Smith, Edingsville, from a blow inflicted by an Axe in the hands of Henry Smith."—C.
