What is this article about?
In a letter dated June 20, 1766, from Jordan's, Richard Bland denies rumors reported at the Oyer and Terminer court that he has declined candidacy for Speaker of the House of Burgesses. He reaffirms his commitment, attributes the rumor possibly to his opinion on separating the Treasury from the Speaker's chair, and seeks the House's support in the upcoming election.

BEING informed it was reported at the last court of Oyer and Terminer, where an indisposition prevented my attendance, that I had declined standing for the Speaker's chair at the next Assembly, I hope my friends will excuse my taking this method to contradict that report, as I am unable to wait on them in person: I have never entertained a thought of giving up my present attempt, since I first offered myself a candidate. I acknowledge it to be my opinion that the Treasury ought to be put upon a new establishment, and not united to the chair, as it has been heretofore: This opinion I have frequently declared, and from hence perhaps it may be that this report has taken its rise, for I am unwilling to believe any Gentleman would propagate it on purpose to do me an injury; but as it is entirely groundless, I hope the Gentlemen of the House of Burgesses will give no credit to it, and that I shall receive their favours at the next election of a Speaker, which will lay a lasting obligation on me.
RICHARD BLAND.
