A Negro Hack Driver Assaults a White Child of 12 Years.
NASHVILLE, TENN., April 5.—A dastardly attempt at outrage was perpetrated about 10 o'clock last night in the very heart of the city. Cries were heard proceeding from a negro tenement house on Cherry street, and when the door was broken by the police a burly negro hack driver named James Caleb was caught assaulting a 12-year-old white girl, Bertha Franklin. The child had been inveigled into the room by an old negress whom she asked for a drink of water, and afterward induced to stay all night, as it was then dark. After the child had fallen asleep the negro fiend attempted his crime, but the girl's cries brought assistance before he had accomplished his purpose. Caleb and the old negress were hurried off to jail before the fact became public, or they would have been hanged. Excitement runs high, and lynching will probably result.
