LEGION TAKES FOURTH
Soldier Boys Will Give Vilas County Big Celebration of Independence Day.
A tentative program of Eagle River's big Fourth celebration is given this week which will be staged and carried out by the Frederic J. Walsh Post American Legion. Each year the village has had a celebration of some sort or has joined in with other villages in the county in the celebration of the big day of days, and it has proven a real interesting meet for those who love the noise and see the stunts carried out for the benefit of the visitors.
This year will see something different. Of course there will be the time-tried stunts such as races for the old and young, for the fat and lean, swimming, diving, eating contests, tug of war, nail driving, greased pig and pole, music, ballyhooing an' ev'rything. The soldiers wish to bring back to the minds and sight of the old-timers the genuine log rolling contest, such as was carried years ago to the extent that it usually ended in a free-for-all fight between friends of the winner and loser.
Have you ever seen a contest of supremacy upon a log with two men who were experts? No. It has been years since such a contest of olden times between champions of river running days has been staged. Two perfect specimens of "river pigs," both artists in their chosen game, are being sought and if they can be located and secured for this contest, it will be worth all the time you lose from fishing or sightseeing to witness it.
Of course there will be a ball game. Phelps will meet Eagle River and possibly there will be a double-header for the fans.
Band music all the day and evening, with a dance to close the festivities.
