Full Text
There is a strong probability that an important portion of the California mails for the 20th of August, destined for the Atlantic States are safe. A gentleman of this city, who mailed a letter here for the East on the 18th of Aug., a day before the closing of the mail, received yesterday, per steamer John L. Stephens, an acknowledgement of the reception of a draft which was enclosed in the letter referred to.
The mail bag in which this letter was deposited must have been detained at some point on the route, or it would have been on board the lost Central America. The fact is important, as furnishing reasonable grounds to suppose that other mail bags made up for the same steamer, were also detained, and that thus many letters containing valuable matter were saved from the wreck.—[Union.
