City Police at the end of the year furnish information to the FBI about the race of persons arrested by them during the year.
The FBI lays no special emphasis on this information, but race-hate sheets, like The White Sentinel published in St. Louis, uses the FBI figures to make the crime rate among colored people appear worse than it actually is.
In publishing the data sent in by chiefs of police in different cities, the FBI attempts no evaluation of it and does not vouch for its accuracy.
But here are the figures on arrests of colored persons, as tabulated by police in 1,551 cities in 1956:
As compared with whites, the totals are: 1,390,944 whites, 634,022 colored, 40,554 Indians, 236 Chinese, 114 Japanese, and 4,924 all others.
For robbery, total arrests were 10,913, of which 5,160 were whites and 5,697 colored.
For aggravated assault, total arrests were 23,760, of which 7,672 were whites and 15,977 were colored.
Other assaults, total arrests were 80,008, of which 12,770 were whites and 36,659 were colored.
For burglary (breaking or entering), total arrests were 46,406, of which 32,407 were whites and 13,748 were colored.
For larceny (theft), total arrests were 92,194 of which 62,852 were whites and 28,686 were colored.
For auto theft, total arrests were 28,035 of which 21,694 were whites and 6,109 were colored.
For embezzlement and fraud, total arrests were 13,693, of which 11,055 were whites and 2,592 were colored.
For stolen property-buying, receiving, etc., total arrests were 5,721 of which 3,377 were whites and 2,304 were colored.
For forgery and counterfeiting, total arrests were 9,036, of which 7,640 were whites and 1,333 were colored.
For rape, total arrests were 4,591 of which 2,509 were whites and 2,043 were colored.
For prostitution and commercialized vice, total arrests were 14,619, of which 7,587 were whites and 6,932 colored.
For other sex offenses, total arrests were 19,597, of which 13,524 were whites and 5,886 were colored.
For narcotic drug laws, total arrests were 7,289, of which 2,862 were whites and 4,387 were colored.
For weapons (carrying, etc.), total arrests were 16,179, of which 7,489 were whites and 8,540 were colored.
For offenses against family and children, total arrests were 22,379, of which 14,856 were whites and 7,421 were colored.
For liquor laws, total arrests were 48,471, of which 25,071 were whites and 18,008 were colored.
For driving while drunk, total arrests were 104,925, of which 86,367 were whites and 17,122 were colored.
For disorderly conduct, total arrests were 241,167, of which 140,281 were white and 98,014 were colored.
For drunkenness, total arrests were 842,415, of which 613,817 were whites and 193,807 were colored.
