Thomas Low, late of Manchester, in Essex county, arrived here from Providence. He states that he was a seaman on board the brig Comet, capt. Prince Allen, which sailed from Boston on the 18th of October last for Savannah, where the brig was loaded with timber, and sailed from thence for Chatham, England, on the 18th December, and on the 27th January at 7 P. M. fell in with a French lugger, off Calais, four leagues S. of Isle of White; who fired very severely into the brig with musquetry, and then boarded the brig, drove every man off deck with swords and pistols, and in five minutes ordered them on deck again, ordered the captain on board the privateer's boat, with five of the hands, and got on board the lugger, which then made sail, with her prize for the French coast. On the next day the Frenchmen run the brig ashore six miles to the E. of Fecamp, where she bilged. The lugger proceeded into Fecamp, where they put the Comet's crew in an Inn, and placed a sentry over them. On the 12th of February they committed all the crew, excepting the captain into close prison, where they were confined nineteen days, after being robbed of most of their cloathing and money.— Application was then made to our minister. who procured our liberty, and we embarked for the United States, in the ship Neptune, captain Hopkins, for Providence, where we arrived. The crew received from the American consul at Dieppe, cloathing to bring them home to America.
