HAVRE DE GRACE, Aug. 21.
Since the arrete of July 22, trade is on a surer and more regular footing. The duties established on colonial commodities in foreign vessels, and from any other place than our colonies, has put an end to the great number of foreigners who filled up our stores and drew out our cash. Trade is become more national, and vessels are to be cleared out for our colonies, that will supply the wants of our consumption, and will enable us soon to supply, as formerly, the north and south of Europe, with an immense overplus.
The consequence of the new regulations has been an increase in the price of colonials commodities, particularly of sugars and coffee; this increase would have been quicker, had it not been stopped by restraint, and the scarcity of cash. Brown sugar that fell to about ten dollars, has been raised this month to more than twelve; and it is thought it will be higher. It is certain that the next 6 months, but a little quantity of sugar can be sent from St. Domingo. and the duties of two crowns and half per cwt. on brown sugar, and 5 dollars and 40 cents on superior quality, is so heavy, that it is next to impossible that it should be cheaper. Between 80 and 90 hhds. were sold last month.
Coffee sells very fast, and the price has been raised from 20 to 24 cents.
Much tobacco was likewise sold from 16 dollars and a half to 17.
Pepper is sold very fast at 27 and 30 cents per lb.
Amer. pot ash is bought at 7 dols 75 cts Dantzick, do. 7 18
Hides, Buenos Ayres, 10 70
They are now in demand here.
Indigo no sooner arrives than it is engrossed at a high price.
No call for cotton; it will be in demand when wanted for consumption. that is to say, in a month or six weeks.
