Killed in a Duel or Affray.-We have mentioned that there was a difficulty between John Shannon, editor of the Visalia Delta, and formerly an editor of the Calaveras Chronicle, and Wm. Gouverneur Morris, and that a challenge had been passed. Morris had published some correspondence between them, and Shannon stated that he could not use a weapon in either hand, and that Morris had used trickery in declining to obey a call of honor. Shannon closed a card recently by saying: "In conclusion, I desire to state that I have not sought to interfere with or interrupt the progress of this affair, but inasmuch as Mr. Morris has chosen to retire from his position, I have only to say that hereafter, should he or any of his kind feel aggrieved by any act or word of mine, they have only to call upon me, with the assurance that I will be prepared to arrange matters with them very summarily, and without the interposition of friends or a resort to the code."
We were informed last evening at the telegraph office that a dispatch had been received from Stockton, stating that a letter was in town, postmarked at Visalia, to the effect that John Shannon was shot there on Thursday afternoon, November 15th, at 3 o'clock, by William Gouverneur Morris, and that he died in one hour afterward. No further circumstances were stated. From the medium of the intelligence and the antecedents of the affair, we have no doubt that the news as received is authentic.-Sac. Union, Monday
