Full Text

The Pennsylvania politicians are preparing the Republican party for a surprise next June. They are quietly canvassing for Don Cameron as the safest and most conservative member of the party with whom to defeat both Blaine and Sherman in the Chicago Convention. The Philadelphia Times has given him 'a boost,' and says that 'from the present outlook of the coming national contest, it is probable that he may present elements of popular strength which would make him the most formidable competitor of Cleveland. He is a conservative, safe man; commerce, finance, business would implicitly trust him, and he would make as thoroughly a partisan President as Mr. Blaine himself. He saved his party from what would have been a deplorable mistake in the early days of the Cleveland administration by demanding the confirmation of all reputable appointments on the distinct ground that when the Republicans regained power, they would promptly remove all Democrats within reach.' This of itself would make Cameron an easy man for the Democrats to defeat. Cleveland would overwhelm him.
