Trenton's School Board Hold Back Salaries by Reason of a Split.
Special to the Jersey City News.
TRENTON, April 30, 1895. - The Trenton Board of Education has split on the question of organization, and as a result 185 school teachers and twenty-five school janitors are likely to go out without their April salary, and as a majority of the female teachers have not yet done their spring shopping there are many loud and pertinent comments. At the time of the regular organization of the new board, two weeks ago, no agreement could be reached on the selection of the subordinate officers. The Democrats had the whole five which the commissioners select, but as the board is now non-partisan in its character, the Republicans claimed that they were entitled to two officers out of the five. The Republicans attended a conference last Thursday night, but as the Democratic members, headed by Judge Robert S. Woodruff, declared that they would proceed with their plan independent of the Republicans, the latter withdrew. The Democrats then sent for Mayor Joseph B. Shaw, who has a right to sit and cast a vote when there is a tie, and with his vote they elected Harry S. Provost as Secretary. Yesterday the Republican members served notice on Leslie Pierson, the city superintendent who is the disbursing officer, that any money paid out on the warrants of the new secretary would be contested and would be at his own risk. He, being under bonds for $30,000, naturally became alarmed and has applied to the City Solicitor for advice. The April salaries are due and until the controversy is settled there will be no money paid out.
