Peace Corps At Work

The Peace Corps has started its campaign in Puerto Rico.

On the recruiting front, first examinations for applicants were held in San Juan the other day. Five young men and a pretty young brunette showed up. The girl, Esperanza A. Rivera of Caguas commented, 'I've always wanted to help people and I think this is the best way to do it.'

The men ranged in age from 28 - Ramon River Suarez of San German and Charles A. Morrow of Bayamon to 18-year old Nicholas Ramos of Caparra Terrace. Rafael V. Toro, 27, of Hato Rey, wants to be a math teacher in Brazil for the corps and Johnny Velazquez, 23, of Las Piedras, would like to do social work.

On The Training Front

On the training front, Rep. Edith Green (D.-Ore.), chairman of a special U. S. House committee on education, is due here June 1 to discuss possible use of the University of Puerto Rico. And the rumor persists that a site near Utuado, north of the rugged Cordillera Central, will be used as a corps training site.
