Randolph Macon College.
The last session of this valuable Literary Institution, numbering 150 students, closed, with the exercises of commencement, on the 12th of June, ultimo. The Fall session will open on the first Thursday in August, that period being found better suited than any other to Students from the lower country, whilst, from the great healthiness of the location of the institution, it is not objectionable to those who come from the upper country.
The Literary degree of A. B. was conferred on the following young gentlemen. (The six honors of this Institution were distributed in the order in which the first six names occur:)
W McK Robbins, of Randolph. N. C.
A E Fowlkes, of Nottoway, Va.
J H Guy, of Goochland, Va.
H F Drake, of Warren, Ala.
W M Crenshaw, of Nottoway, Ala.
H G Leigh, of Mecklenburg, Va.
H. W. Wingfield of Hanover, Va.
R. J. Palmer of Appomattox, Va.
J. M. Palmer of Warren, Ala.
J. S. Long of Washington, Ala.
J. O'Hanlon of Fayetteville, Va.
W. H. Christian of New Kent, Va.
R. H. Williams of Nottoway, Va.
H. D. Bracey of Mecklenburg, Va.
A valued friend writes us as follows:
"I rejoice to assure you that the Institution is now upon a basis which it never occupied before. Our debts, (the accumulations of years,) are all provided for, and will be liquidated without embarrassment. All accruing debt to Officers, is cut off by a sufficient amount at interest, as an endowment fund. This has been done by the individual liberality of citizens chiefly of Virginia and North Carolina-not a cent of State patronage. Hitherto many young men have turned from us, because they doubted the permanency of the institution. Many of our friends who sought a permanent investment of their money for the cause of benevolence, have for the same reason been deterred from making bequests by which the Trustees would have been able to enlarge the operations of the College. Each of these causes of distrust, is now at an end; and we have reason to believe that a long and successful career of usefulness awaits Randolph Macon."
"The Literary Societies were to have been addressed by the Hon. Mr. Bocock, and the Society of Alumni by an Alumnus, Mr. W. C. Daub, of Raleigh, N. C.: but we were disappointed in the former by the death of a near relative, and in the latter by causes beyond his control. The ability, however, with which the talented graduating class sustained themselves in their addresses, gave the usual interest to the occasion."
