Full Text
From the United States Gazette.
Mr. Bronson,
Excuse me for polluting your paper with some further extracts from the pages of the Aurora. But I promised to show the public how this paper bespattered commodore Rodgers, in 1799, with filth & venom; although now, forsooth, it will not permit his fair fame to be breathed upon; and shrinks, in painful sensibility, if the omnipotence of the commodore is questioned, or any fear for his safety suggested.
Aurora, March 15th, 1799.
"There can be little doubt that lieut. Rogers, of the Constellation, will be confirmed in the command of the Insurgente, as the following article, extracted from his letter, qualifies him for command--'Although I would not have you think me bloody-minded, yet I must confess the most gratifying sight my eyes ever beheld was seventy four French pirates weltering in their gore!!!' It is presumed that Mr. Sterret will also be promoted, as he has manifested his hatred to pale faces, in a manner which cannot be too much commended."
March 21st.
"Fenno and Rogers vow they will cover themselves with sackcloth and ashes on the fast day, and pray with empty stomachs for the blessing of shortly wading up to their mouths in the blood of Frenchmen."
Same Day.
"What a pity that Rogers had not a tomahawk when he was exulting over his fallen foes: he might have gratified his friends by sending them a few French scalps as trophies of victory."
Same Day.
"We should be happy to receive an account of the family and lineage of the heroic Rodgers. We hope that the nation of Esquimaux Indians will not claim him as a worthy descendant."
