California Group Blamed For Plight Of Farm Workers
Only Political Action Can Help The Migrant Farmer, Social Workers Told
Grand Rapids, Mich.—Addressing a national conference of social workers here, Carey McWilliams, head of the California Division of Immigration and Housing, blamed the Associated Farmers of California for "deliberately producing the conditions of agricultural workers which were published in 'Grapes of Wrath.'" He said:
"Standing squarely in the path of progress in dealing with the migratory labor in California today is this organization. Through its control of the apparatus of local county government it has tried to disenfranchise agricultural workers; to intimidate migrants so they dare not apply for relief; to gain control of administration or relief in rural areas; intimidate teachers, social workers, public officials, clergymen, any one who endeavors to learn the facts and call attention to existing conditions.
"Only political action can help the migrant farmer."
