Russia has now 350 living authors. Most of them are of the nobility. One-eighth of the whole number are clergymen. Up to the year 1807, 4000 works had appeared in the Russian language. In the year 1810, the Russian National Library was in possession of almost 3000 volumes by native authors, among which there were 105 romances. There are already 8000 works in the Russian language. Moscow has 9 public libraries and 10 printing offices; St. Petersburg, 7 public libraries and 15 printing offices; Wilna, 1 public library and 5 printing offices; Revel, Dorpat, Cracow, have each 1 library and 2 printing offices. In all Russia there are only 8 or 9 letter foundries.
