Jamaica Banana Trees Wrecked

HAVANA Sept 28-(UP) Hurricane struck Camaguey provinces.

Belen observatory announced at 6:30 a.m. EST that the storm was traveling at great speed north-northeastward. Communications are down at many points. A message from Cienfuegos on the south coast was received before the authorities cut off electric power as a precautionary measure, said that the barometer was dropping fast with a sixty-mile gale lashing the city.

Early reports indicated that the hurricane was cutting a hundred mile wide path across Santa Clara and Camaguey provinces, extending from the southern coast at Bahamas channel west to Moron, near the northern coast. Lack of communication caused the government considerable anxiety. The Cuban telephone company reported its lines had been cut 120 miles of Havana. The treasury department radio station learned that there were no casualties.

Slight damage was wrought in Santa Clara. In the east portion of the province. crops and livestock were seriously damaged.

The number of casualties is unknown where the full force of the hurricane was felt.

Cities and towns along the Cuban south coast last night had rushed preparations to withstand the tropical hurricane which was reported moving in that direction across the Caribbean Sea and was expected to strike the island early Saturday.

The first serious effects of the storm were felt in Jamaica where gales swept sections of the island and uprooted more than 1,000,000 banana trees.

At 5 p. m. Friday the Belen observatory announced that the hurricane would strike Cuba slightly east of Cienfuegos shortly after midnight. The provinces of Matanzas, Santa Clara and Camaguey were expected to be most seriously affected. The disturbance was reported traveling in a north by northeast direction.

The national observatory issued storm warnings along the entire south coast while authorities at Pinar Del Rio prohibited departure of all vessels from south coast ports of that province. Inhabitants were securing their windows and laying in provisions.

Other provinces made preparations and the mayor of Santa Cruz Del Sur, Camaguey province, requested trains to help move a number of families already evacuating their homes in fear of a repetition of the November, 1932 tidal wave which killed 2,500 and wiped out the town.

Aviation schedules were suspended by the National Aviation company which cancelled departures from Havana for Santiago and from Santiago for Guantanamo because of storm warnings.

Heavy rains and brisk winds were reported today from Oriente province.

Public work employees roped all trees in Havana parks and plazas as precaution against their being blown down, while soldiers and sailors throughout the island were held in readiness for rescue work.
